Strasburg man faces arson charges
By Joe Beck
A Strasburg man is facing three counts of arson that authorities have linked to an incident on Dec. 6 in which he is accused of pouring gasoline on an occupied residence and several vehicles and trying to light it.
Boyd Allen Hockman, 60, of 720 Clary Road, is being held without bail in the Shenandoah County jail awaiting his next court appearance in general district court at 9 a.m. Dec. 27.
Capt. Wesley Dellinger of the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office said deputies arrived at a home on Cedar Creek Road in Star Tannery around 2 p.m. Dec. 6 after receiving a report of arson at the address.
Dellinger said the victim, identified in court documents as Rhoda Lynn Artz of 775 Cedar Creek Road, told the deputies that Hockman had tried to burn down her home while she was inside. The criminal complaint in the case identifies two other people inside the residence, Dorian Lee Triplett, and Artz's 8-year-old son.
"He poured gas on the main entrance to the residence," Dellinger said of Hockman.
Dellinger said Hockman also poured gasoline on the hoods and windshields of two vehicles parked in the driveway belonging to Artz and Triplett.
"In addition, he struck the main door of the residence with an ax, causing $800 damage," Dellinger said.
"Dorian stated she saw Hockman attempting to light the gas with matches," the criminal complaint states.
Hockman fled when Triplett told him that sheriff's deputies were on their way to the residence, according to the criminal complaint.
Dellinger said deputies arrested Hockman later the same day without incident at his residence.
No one was injured in the incident, Dellinger said.
Shenandoah County Fire Marshal David Ferguson assisted in the investigation, Dellinger said.
