If your New Year's resolutions include helping others and becoming more physically active, one Warren County fitness trainer can help knock both of those out in one hike.
Sierra Stern, who moved to Linden from Frederick, Md., in July, offers "Hikes for the Hungry." She said people who bring her canned food, which she then donates to a local food bank, can get a free cardio hike in exchange.
"People show up wherever we park at the trailhead and we hike around," she said. "I've done cardio hikes in the past where people show up and we have pushups on logs and stuff like that."
These cardio hikes, which vary in intensity depending on the participants involved, typically stretch for a couple miles on the nearby trails. Stern said that when she worked in Frederick, she would collect up to 70 food items.
"Some people just brought one can, but if people had extra stuff in their pantry, they would bring a whole bag," she said.
Stern has served as a National Academy of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer for nearly 10 years and offers one-on-one, group and corporate training for the northern Shenandoah Valley area. For more information, visit balancefitnesstrainer.com or email her at email@example.com.
