Investigation continues into possible Middletown embezzlement

By Joe Beck

Middletown officials and residents continue to wait for the outcome of a state police investigation into a case of possible embezzlement in the town government.

Town, county and state police officials said Tuesday the investigation is continuing.

Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler of the Virginia State Police said he had nothing to add to the confirmation of the investigation he provided in mid-December.

"I haven't been given any more updates on that case," Tyler said.

Frederick County Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Nicholas Manthos said state police briefed his office in a meeting last week.

The briefing was the first prosecutors have received in the case, Manthos said, adding that state police are "still getting the case together."

"The investigation is ongoing," Manthos said. "It has not been wrapped up yet."

Middletown Mayor Charles Harbaugh IV said he was also waiting to hear more about the investigation.

"We're the ones that called them, and we need some clarity in this matter," Harbaugh said, referring to town officials notification of law enforcement.

Harbaugh added that the investigation has not affected the day-to-day operations of town government.

"We've got a job to do, and we've got to do it, investigation or not," Harbaugh said.
