LFCC to host Nonprofit Academy

By Ryan Cornell

Eight workshops geared toward staff, executive directors and board members of nonprofit organizations are slated for the first Nonprofit Academy held at Lord Fairfax Community College from February to April.

Jeanian Clark, vice president of workforce development at LFCC Workforce Solutions, said the workshops, which teach skills such as financial reporting, fundraising and strategic planning, are for nonprofits that have employees who are dedicated, but whose resources might be thinning.

"Oftentimes, these nonprofits are made up of a staff of two or three at max," she said. "And most of the time, they aren't full-time employees."

Because these staffs can so minuscule, Clark said their roles are interchangeable and volunteers often have to double as board members and fundraisers.

"These people are very passionate about the purpose they serve and are consumed with the mission of their nonprofit," she said. "There is an art to the behind-the-scenes operations that must be the foundational ground of any nonprofit."

She said the facilitators leading the courses are considered national experts and have all worked and consulted for nonprofits.

"This is really designed for everyone on the spectrum that's affiliated with nonprofits," she said.

"If I were even toying with the idea now of starting a nonprofit, I would definitely take this first."

The courses range from three to seven hours long and cost between $49 and $99 for non-members and $15 to $29 for members of the academy's three partner organizations: Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce, Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce and Our Health.

Individuals who attend five of the eight courses will receive a certificate in nonprofit management from LFCC Workforce Solutions.
