McDonald's reveals site plan in Woodstock

By Ryan Cornell

WOODSTOCK -- Hungry Woodstock residents looking to satisfy their McNugget cravings may have to search elsewhere during the three to four months the town's McDonald's is being demolished and rebuilt.

The Woodstock Planning Commission on Tuesday reviewed site plans submitted by Harrisonburg-based APB Enterprises, which owns the franchise. The plans call for tearing down the McDonald's restaurant located at 335 W. Reservoir Road and constructing an updated model in its place.

The design of the new McDonald's would include two drive-thru lanes and nearly 900 square feet of additional space.

Brent Manuel, assistant town manager of Woodstock, said there is no estimated start date of construction, but it could take between three and four months to complete once work has begun.

Built in the early 1970s, the McDonald's was the first fast food restaurant on the Reservoir Road corridor.

"So that's 40 years," Manuel said. "Someone once said, 'No matter what you do to a 1965 Chevy, it's always going to be a 1965 Chevy.'"

The new design would include landscaping changes and added trees and shrubs.

"Curb, gutter, parking lot, everything goes," Manuel said.

The layout would also remove the exit on Reservoir Road and convert the existing entrance into a point for both entry and egress. An additional entrance and exit leading onto Motel Drive would be added.

Concerns about the traffic flow on Reservoir Road were expressed at the meeting.

"During different times of the day, it's not a pleasant experience," Manuel said.

The site plans are awaiting approval from the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Town of Woodstock and Shenandoah County, which will review the plan's erosion, sediment control and stormwater management.

Calls placed to APB Enterprises were not returned.
