A pedestrian was struck and killed on Back Road in Shenandoah County on Monday morning, according to F. L. (Les) Tyler of the Virginia State Police.

Erva Weatherholtz Berchdorf, 87, of Mauretown, was struck by a 1991 Ford Ranger pickup operated by Rodney A. Foltz, 36, of Edinburg, at around 6:30 a.m. The crash took place one mile north of Fairview Road.

It was dark at the time of the incident, Tyler said.

“He was traveling northbound when a pedestrian crossed from the west side of Back Road, crossed the southbound lanes and then walked out into the northbound lanes in front of the pickup,” Tyler said.

Berchdorf died at the scene as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash, Tyler added.

Trooper J.L Streett is investigating the incident, assisted by the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office and Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue.

Based on Streett’s investigation, Tyler said, no charges have been placed.
