Police charge man with unlawful hunting

Front Royal police charged a town resident with unlawful hunting last week and several related offenses after they discovered a dead deer lying in his backyard around 6 p.m. Jan. 26.

A news release from Police Chief Norman Shiflett said police responded to a report of shots fired and spoke to several witnesses in the Royal Avenue neighborhood. They identified a residence at 42 Royal Lane as the source of the gunfire.

Police also charged Alan Mecimore, 48, of 42 Royal Lane, with reckless handling of a firearm, hunting with an illegal caliber gun and firing a gun within town limits.

Officers confiscated a .22 caliber magnum rifle from the residence.

Detective Crystal Cline said in an interview Friday that it is illegal to fire a gun within town limits throughout the week.
