Police investigating Middletown home invasions

By Joe Beck

Middletown police are searching for a man involved in two home invasions and a burglary on Church Street in the early morning hours of Jan. 16.

Chief R. Phillip Breeden said a lone man entered all three homes between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., ransacked purses and wallets and made off with valuables. There are no suspects.

No one was injured, but Breeden said one woman narrowly missed encountering the intruder as she went down the steps to investigate some noise downstairs. Breeden said the victim retreated back up the stairs when she realized that someone other than her husband was making the noise.

"Whoever it was, he left the same way he came in," Breeden said. "If she had continued down the steps, she would have run right into the guy."

Breeden said nothing has been found missing so far in the burglary, but money was taken from purses and wallets in the two home invasions. He said a video recorder was also taken in one of the home invasions and a drawer containing silverware in another.

Wolf said the suspect entered the homes by forcing doors open with a screwdriver.

Breeden said his department is working with law enforcement officials in Shenandoah and Frederick counties, Washington County in Maryland and Pennsylvania who may be investigating similar cases.

"I'd just like to ask people with all this going on to be more cautious, and if they have deadbolts, start using deadbolts," Breeden said.

Anyone with information about the home invasions and burglary is asked to call Middletown police at 868-0535.
