Restoration continues on 129-year-old Woodstock building

A 129-year-old building in downtown Woodstock that once housed Schmitt’s Drug Store is undergoing an extensive restoration project.
The project is led by Jeffrey Buettner, who purchased the property about four years ago and started renovating the building last year. He said crews are working hard to keep the structure’s details historically accurate.
“You can’t find any of the woodworking, so we’ve had to custom-make all of the points and tucks and scrolls, which keeps the historic features of the building intact,” he said.
Located at 123 and 125 N. Main St., the property contains two ground-level commercial spaces, three second-floor apartments and one large penthouse apartment on the third floor.
The penthouse, which Buettner described as having “great natural lighting and a view of the Woodstock skyline,” serves as the final phase of the restoration project.
In addition to his Tire Distributors businesses in Woodstock and Winchester, Buettner has developed commercial properties in Winchester and Frederick and Shenandoah counties, though the Schmitt building is the “first large scale renovation [he’s] done.”
“It’s a very prominent building, very close to the courthouse and town office buildings,” he said.
According to the Woodstock Museum, the building was erected in 1885 by Bernadoitte Schmitt to serve as the family residence and drug store. Joseph B. Clower purchased the building and the business in 1944 and managed the pharmacy until 1956, when he sold it to the owners of Walton & Smoot.
“It was just a very attractive building and had a lot of history,” Buettner said. “When we bought it, it was really in disrepair and felt it was a nice building to restore on Main Street.
“Nobody’s given it the TLC we feel like it deserves.”
Crews are expected to finish replacing the roof this week and will wait until spring to paint the exterior woodwork. He said renovations of the penthouse could start as early as mid-summer.
