Stephens City leaders to fill council seat

By Alex Bridges

Stephens City leaders plan to fill a vacancy on Town Council next month.

Councilman James Harter resigned from his position effective Dec. 31. Council likely would appoint someone at its regular meeting Feb. 4, Town Manager Mike Kehoe said Monday.

Harter announced at council's Dec. 3 meeting that he needed to resign because his new home on Double Church Road in Frederick County lies outside town limits.

Council's appointment would serve out the rest of Harter's term that ends Dec. 31. Council's Personnel Committee has discussed candidates to fill the vacancy. Kehoe said council has a couple of people in mind but he couldn't identify them.

"We've had a couple of people who have shown interest [who are] serving in the Planning Commission," Kehoe said.

Harter served on the Planning Commission before he joined council in 2006. Harter was re-elected to serve a second term in 2010. Kehoe noted that often council picks someone from the Planning Commission to fill a vacancy.

Harter's seat comes up for election in November along with two other council posts and the mayor.
