Umbrella designer prepares for next show

You can stand under her umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh.
And according to Emily Seiler, who runs Emily’s Umbrellas out of her Winchester home, you can choose the art you want on each side of that umbrella.
“You can have your grandchildren’s faces or dogs printed on the umbrellas,” she said. “As long as I get a good .pdf or .jpg.”
Seiler, who worked as an interior designer for 35 years, designed draperies and bedroom covers when she took a glance out her window.
“One day I looked at the umbrellas on my deck and said ‘God, I need to make a new umbrella,'” recalled Seiler. “Why not make it reversible?”
She finished the idea and patented the design after her friend suggested it. After five years of waiting to secure the patent, she formed Emily’s Umbrellas in 2010.
“There’s no other reversible umbrella out there,” she said. “It gives you two worlds.”
Customers can choose their own designs and can decide whether they want scalloped, ruffled or tasseled edges. Seiler said she prefers to follow both form and function.
“In the interior design world, it’s all about options, trims, combining two fabrics,” she said. “Everything has a dual purpose and options.”
Last year, her umbrellas won the distinction of “Best Outdoor Product for 2013” at the Capital Home and Garden Show held in Chantilly.
“I was so excited because this was our very first show of exposing it to the world,” she said. “I was just so excited having worked on it for a while to know that people like it that much.”
Seiler is returning to the show next month with a new line of double-ruffled umbrellas. She said she’s also attending the American Rental Show in Orlando, Fla.
“I just have the best time working for customers because they’re [umbrellas] unique to their own setting,” Seiler said. “Some people design them to match their homes, the colors of their house. It’s been a blast.”
