Woodstock unveils town bumper sticker

By Ryan Cornell

Woodstock residents curious about the new design on their town's water tank can get a closer peek by picking up one of the "Discover Woodstock" bumper stickers that arrived in town last week.

Featuring the black silhouette of a Swiss guard facing left on a dark green background and "Discover Woodstock Virginia" written over top in gold lettering, the town bumper sticker will replicate the nearly completed update on the North Street Water Tank.

Jane Beasley, enhancement coordinator with the Woodstock Enhancement Committee, said the green color scheme and Swiss guard motif, matching the figure atop the courthouse weathervane, stays consistent with the town's branding and is easier to interpret than the previous "WDSK' bumper sticker.

"It was more of an abbreviation," she said, recalling the sticker that was placed on more than 5,000 vehicles. "Very intriguing but not as easy to understand."

Workers started applying the first coat of paint to the water tank on Wednesday. The logo, overlooking the north- and south-facing lanes of Interstate 81, will replace "Virginia" as seen on the sticker with "est. 1752."

The design of the logo took a total of about six months and a couple redesigns, Beasley said. Other designs were submitted by local citizens and businesses and also were considered.

"There were some very intricate designs, some town-themed and mountain themed, but with details that high in a quick moment on the interstate, it's just too much detail," she said. "We needed something short and sweet and precise."

Beasley, who has already slapped one on her car, said the sticker is used not only to promote the town to outsiders, but also lets residents display their Woodstock pride.

She said the bumper stickers are available for free at the municipal office at 135 N. Main St., participating Woodstock businesses and at special events.
