Authorities investigating case of possible arson

By Katie Demeria

A fire at an abandoned building in Basye is being investigated as a possible case of arson.

The call alerting authorities to the fire came in at 2:49 p.m. Sunday, according to Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue Fire Marshall David Ferguson.

"This involved the old Bryce Hotel, from what I've been told," Ferguson said.

The building is located across from the 263 Diner in Basye, he added.

The fire was under control by 4 p.m., Ferguson said, and crews cleared away from the scene by 9 p.m.

Authorities are in the process of investigating whether or not it is a case of arson.

"Further investigation is needed," Ferguson said.

Dale Orebaugh, a firefighter with Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue, was in the area at the time of the fire and alerted authorities to the flames.

Orkney Springs Fire and Rescue, New Market Volunteer Fire Company, Mount Jackson Rescue and Fire, and Conicville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, along with Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue.
