Defendant in stabbing case ordered held without bond

By Joe Beck

FRONT ROYAL -- A man facing a charge of malicious wounding linked to the stabbing of a woman early Sunday morning remained held without bail after a hearing Tuesday in Warren County General District Court.

Judge W. Dale Houff also ordered the case transferred to juvenile and domestic relations court where the defendant, Eric Lamont Garris, 29, of 450 Hill St., is scheduled to appear at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

"There's a presumption against bond, given the nature of the offense," Houff told Garris after the defendant questioned why he continued to be held without bond.

Police said Garris was detained Sunday morning at Warren Memorial Hospital after he and the victim, Cassandra Porter, 24, appeared at the emergency room seeking treatment for her wounds. Hospital staff called police around 4:10 a.m.

The criminal complaint filed against Garris states that Porter suffered eight stab wounds to the head and upper body. Police described the injuries as initially life-threatening.

Authorities said Monday that Porter was later taken to Winchester Medical Center where she is recovering from her injuries.

The criminal complaint states that Porter gave police a statement at the hospital in which she described going to a bar with a girlfriend in Winchester. Garris arrived later and saw her dancing with another man, according to the complaint.

The complaint states that Garris and Porter returned home to 450 Hill St. and went to bed together.

"Porter then stated that Garris started to hit her and scream at her," the complaint states. "Porter then felt blood running down her face. Garris then told her that he needed to get her to the hospital before she bled to death.

"Garris walked Porter out of the residence with his hand over her mouth so she wouldn't wake anyone up, locked Porter's 5-year-old daughter in the apartment and drove her to the ER."

The complaint states that Porter told police that Garris threw the knife used to stab her out the window on South Street while they traveled to the hospital.

Garris is also charged with child endangerment. The criminal complaint states that hospital staff called Porter's family and asked them to go get her child after the couple arrived at the emergency room.
