Democrats sets rules for congressional nomination
By Joe Beck
Democratic party leaders in the 10th Congressional District have chosen Park View High School in Sterling as the site of their nominating convention scheduled for 10 a.m. April 26.
The announcement by 10th District committee members was accompanied by details of the nominating process leading up to the convention.
The convention will be preceded by a two-week period for choosing nominating delegates within each of the 10th District jurisdictions of Frederick, Clarke, Loudon, Prince William and Fairfax counties and Winchester, Manassas and Manassas Park.
The 300 district delegates will be chosen at caucuses to be held between March 29 and April 12. Local party leaders will choose the time and place of caucuses in each jurisdiction.
The caucuses are open to all registered voters in the 10th District provided they declare they will not support an opponent of the Democratic nominee in the November general election.
Participants must also consider themselves to be Democrats and not participate in any other party’s nominating process in the 10th District in 2014.
Charlie Jackson, chairman of the 10th District Democratic Committee, said the two-week caucus period will allow the party’s congressional candidates — Fairfax County supervisor John Foust, Fairfax attorney Richard Bolger and Marine Corps veteran David R. Wroblewski — to build momentum toward the convention.
A fourth candidate, architect/author Sam Kubba of Leesburg, dropped out of the race earlier this week.
The candidates seeking the Democratic nomination must each submit petitions with at least 1,000 signatures and a $5,000 filing fee by March 11. The petitions and filing fee, in the form of a check or money order, should be sent to Charlie Jackson, 43091 Autumnwood Square, Ashburn, VA 20148.
Jackson said the filing fee is unchanged from recent elections.
“One of the purposes of the filing fee is to help pay for the cost of the nominating process, including the convention,” Jackson said.
