Woodstock homeless camp ordered to relocate
By Ryan Cornell
WOODSTOCK -- Since July, drivers traveling on U.S. 11 could spot the six tents and a campfire dotting the clearing south of Woodstock.
The tents will be gone soon, though the homeless men occupying them have moved on.
Roy Marshall, who has lived in the tent city since it began, said he's been ordered to move the tents by this weekend.
According to the Shenandoah County zoning and subdivision administrator, the activities at the site violate an ordinance in that particular zoning district.
Marshall said he's been the only one staying at the campsite for the past week -- by his own accord -- after a group of concerned citizens decided to provide shelter from the recent snow and ice storms for the other homeless men.
The group of citizens started supplying two apartments for the homeless men on Jan. 28.
The group arranged for one homeless man's bus ticket to Florida to be with his family and another man suffering from bronchitis to see a doctor.
"They're helping them with getting jobs," said Marshall, who isn't involved in the group. "It's not any organization, just folks who are grassroots and filled with compassion."
As for Marshall, he's not sure where his tents are headed next, but he hinted it's "wherever the Lord leads."
