Hotels experienced a rough winter

By Ryan Cornell

WOODSTOCK -- While seasonal businesses like Bryce Resort in Basye nearly reached record-setting numbers because of all the snow, the weather hasn't been as kind to local hotels.

Janice Casto, who represents Shenandoah County hotels in the county's tourism council, said hotels have all been struggling this winter because of the frequent inclement weather.

Traditionally, travelers stranded by snowstorms would pull off the highway and stay the night in a hotel room. She said more and more tourists are checking weather forecasts and planning their trips around the reports.

"The weather people are getting too good at predicting," she said. "It used to be we caught them [drivers] on the interstate and they would be surprised. Now they all know, so they're not coming out."

Casto was unable to give precise statistics, but said she thinks all hotel numbers were down.

Instead of stranded travelers, she said many guests have included the hotel's own staff, truckers halted by the weather and hospital workers, caretakers and other employees of essential services, who received a "deeply discounted rate" during the latest snowstorm.

"We are more than ready for the spring," she said.
