Man held after stabbing of Front Royal woman

By Joe Beck

A Front Royal woman was hospitalized with life-threatening wounds after she was stabbed several times early Sunday morning.

Police Chief Norman Shiflett said in a news release that police arrested Eric Lamont Garris, 29, and charged him with malicious wounding and child endangerment. Garris is being held without bond in the Warren County Jail and is scheduled for another bond hearing Tuesday in general district court.

Garris stabbed Cassandra Porter, 24 in the couple's home at 450 Hill St. in the midst of a domestic dispute, according to police.

Detective Crystal Cline said in an interview Monday that Porter appeared likely to survive her wounds.

"She's definitely in stable condition," Cline said of Porter.

Cline said Garris drove Porter to Warren Memorial Hospital after the stabbing. Police said the hospital staff notified them of Porter's injuries around 4:10 a.m., and Porter was later taken to Winchester Medical Center.

Cline said police "detained Garris at the hospital for investigative reasons" before taking him into custody. Police also took a statement from Porter, whom Cline described as Garris's live-in girlfriend.

Cline said Garris moved from South Carolina to Front Royal nine months ago for "employment opportunities."

Cline provided no information on the circumstances that led to the charge of child endangerment against Garris.

"I can't comment on what happened there," she said, citing issues of confidentiality involving crimes against children.
