Man rescued from woods, flown to Winchester Medical Center

By Katie Demeria

A Front Royal man was rescued from the woods along Steed Lane in Warren County on Tuesday evening.

According to Warren County Fire and Rescue Services Chief Richard Mabie, emergency crews responded to the scene at 9:45 p.m. and were able to find the man by 9:53.

The man's name was not released.

"Apparently the guy wandered off in the day, sometime during the mid afternoon yesterday," Mabie said.

When the individual did not come home, his friends went out looking for him, Mabie continued.

"They found him about a mile away from his house and across from the creek," he said. "He wasn't acting right, so they stayed with him and called 911."

Officers from the Warren County Sheriff's Office were also dispatched to the scene, according to Lt. Roger Vorous.

"When they got there, they spoke with the mother, and she pointed them in the direction," Vorous said. "They hiked back in the woods about three quarter miles, located the subject with some friends, and he was apparently disoriented."

Based on the way the man was acting, Mabie said, rescue workers believed his condition may have been serious. He said they walked him out of the woods.

"They ended up doing an assessment in the back of the ambulance, covered him with warm blankets, took his vitals and so forth," Mabie said. "They then transported him from the scene to the Warren County airport, which is where Air Care is based, and flew him from there."

They were able to get the man to the airport by 11:20 p.m.

Mabie said they flew the patient to Winchester Medical Center, where a further assessment of his condition was made.
