Traffic stop leads to arrest on five weapon, ammo charges
By Joe Beck
A Roanoke man is being held without bond after he was charged early Friday morning with five weapons-related offenses arising from a traffic stop on Interstate 81 outside Strasburg.
Duane Antoine Andrews, 34, was charged with three counts of possession of ammunition by a felon, possession of a firearm by a felon and possessing a firearm while being the subject of a protective order.
A criminal complaint filed by state trooper Jonathan Rothwell states that Andrews' arrest began with a traffic stop. Rothwell recorded an Infiniti SUV traveling at 83 mph in a 65 mph zone around 4 a.m., according to court records.
"I approached the vehicle and identified the driver as Mr. Khalid Zafrain from his (Virginia) driver's license," Rothwell wrote. "The driver was very nervous and stuttering. The passenger sitting beside him would not make eye contact with me."
Rothwell said he searched the vehicle and found a handgun loaded with three rounds in a bag in the rear seat of the vehicle.
Rothwell conducted the search after calling in a drug-sniffing dog from the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office, the complaint states. The dog alerted to the vehicle, according to the complaint.
Rothwell wrote that the passenger told him he had no identification, but Rothwell obtained his name and birthday. A dispatcher reported that Andrews was a convicted felon wanted in Roanoke for failure to appear in court and the subject of two protective orders, the complaint states.
The driver of the vehicle claimed the gun did not belong to him, according to the complaint.
Assistant commonwealth's attorney Al Mitchell said in an interview Monday that Andrews' residence outside the area was one of the factors that contributed to the decision to hold him without bail.
"He's had some criminal history," Mitchell added.
Andrews next court appearance is scheduled for 11 a.m. March 11 in general district court.
