Daily staff report
The Kmart store on South Pleasant Valley Road in Winchester will begin its liquidation sale on April 3 and close to the public in early June, according to a statement from the company.
Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings Corp., said in a statement that the location is closing because its lease was not renewed. He added that the multiple store closures -- including a location in Harrisonburg -- are part of a series of actions to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust their asset base and accelerate the transformation of their business model.
"These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail -- at the store, online and in the home," he stated in an email.
Of the Winchester store's 91 employees, most of whom work part-time, eligible associates will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart locations, he stated.
The Kmart location in Front Royal will remain open, he noted.
