Bass-Hoover student recovers from surgery

Daily Staff Report

Andrew Sayens, a kindergartner at Bass-Hoover Elementary who underwent open heart surgery for his hypertrophic cardiomyopathy condition last month, is back at home recovering from the surgery.

Andrew now has an implantable cardioverter-defirbrillator, after tests at the Mayo Clinic revealed scarring on his heart.

According to a statement from his family, Andrew has told them that he can breathe easier and doesn't feel his heart pounding like before. His family was also told that the surgery would be a temporary source of relief for Andrew, rather than a permanent fix.

Andrew will be homeschooled for about two months and then might return to school.

Donations for Andrew's ongoing care can be given at gofundme.com/4xdy2w or made to the City National Bank in Stephens City under the Andrew Sayens Heart Fund.
