Jackson’s Corner Café to open in Lee-Jackson Building

It won’t be long before the drip-drip-drip of percolating coffee and whirring of ground java beans join the din of Civil War gunfire.

A café offering all five of Cabin Creek Roasters’ battlefield blends — and eventually a variety of soups, sandwiches and pastries — is scheduled to open in Downtown New Market this spring. Jackson’s Corner Café will operate on the first floor of the Lee-Jackson Building, headquarters of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.

Amy Proctor, operations manager for the foundation, said the café plans to host a soft opening in time for the Battle of New Market reenactment on May 17.

“We want this to be a comfortable and inviting place for both tourists and locals,” she said. “We want it to be a nice place for people to have a bite to eat and have a small business meeting.”

Cabin Creek Roasters donates up to 30 percent of the proceeds from the sales of its battlefield blend coffees to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.

“One of the significant things is that [Cabin Creek Roasters] plans to have their roaster in the building so people can actually see the coffee being roasted and can either buy a bag of coffee to bring home with them or buy a cup of coffee,” Proctor said.

She said the foundation plans to have some of its temporary displays up in the building’s Civil War Orientation Center by reenactment weekend. She added that the foundation continues to raise funds for the center’s permanent displays.

Cabin Creek Roasters is owned by Monty and Vicki Ruckman. Shannon Melanson will serve as the manager of Jackson’s Corner Café.
