Fire marshal: Basye blaze likely caused by juveniles

By Katie Demeria

Three juvenile males likely caused the fire that damaged an abandoned building in Basye on Sunday, Feb. 23.

According to Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal David Ferguson, the males are around 14 and 15 years old and from the Basye area.

"They had been at the structure and set portions of the building on fire," Ferguson said.

"At this point in time, we're still in the investigation mode and talking with juvenile probation," he added.

The abandoned structure is located across from the 263 Diner in Basye. According to Ferguson, it was an old Bryce Hotel building.

Authorities began investigating whether or not arson was involved soon after the fire occurred. They were alerted to the flames by Dale Orebaugh, a firefighter with the Department of Rire andRescue who was in the area at the time.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.
