First Circle K franchise opens in area

MOUNT JACKSON — Drivers looking to fill ‘er up may have noticed a change to the old Randy Mart in Mount Jackson.

The North Main Street convenience store has been remodeled into a Circle K franchise, which opened Feb. 18.

Mount Jackson-based Holtzman Oil Corp. owns the Liberty gas station and the store.

Rick Koontz, vice president of Holtzman Oil Corp., said the company has an agreement with Circle K to help with area redevelopment. The family operating the store hasn’t changed, though more employees have been hired.

“I do think for those people familiar with the old store, it’s a totally new operation, a totally new offering,” Koontz said. “It has a wide variety of things in the store that they didn’t have before.”

Some of those additions include a soda fountain with 20 choices — including both Pepsi and Coke products — cappuccino and iced coffee machines, a roller grill with hot dogs, and new gas pumps open 24 hours.

According to Circle K’s website, it’s one of the most popular convenience store franchises with more than 3,300 locations in the U.S.

“[It’s] not a popular name in our immediate area, but if you go to Northern Virginia or the Midwest, you’ll see them,” Koontz said. “As far as Holtzman Oil, we’re going to develop…along the 81 corridor and you’ll see some more Circle K’s popping up in our area soon.”

He said a Liberty gas station in Harrisonburg is currently being remodeled into another Circle K franchise.

He added that customer response from the change has been positive.

“I think they like what it has to offer,” he said. “They like the looks and the openness. It’s going over very very well.”
