Man accused of pointing gun at deputy, sergeant

By Joe Beck

A Strasburg man is being held without bond in the Warren County Jail after an encounter with law enforcement officials in which he is accused of pulling a gun on two members of the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

John Francis Carter III, 67, of 245 Mitchell Drive, is charged with two counts of assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of pointing and brandishing a firearm and reckless handling of a firearm.

Capt. Michael Arnold of the Sheriff's Office said Carter was detained around 2 p.m. on Feb. 27 after deputies responded to a report of gunfire in the area of Mitchell Drive.

"While in the area looking, they heard shots firing and went out in the woods and found Mr. Carter," Arnold said.

Arnold said Carter was facing away from deputy Jeremy Seabright and Sgt. Josh Seal. They asked Carter to turn around and saw a gun in his hand when he did so, Arnold said.

"They told him to drop it, and he pointed it at them," Arnold said of Seabright and Seal.

Master Deputy Robert Mumaw came up from behind Carter and subdued him, according to Arnold. An ambulance was also called, Arnold said.

"Apparently he had some kind of medical issue and was taken to the hospital," Arnold said of Carter.

Carter appeared in general district court on Tuesday and has another court date scheduled for 2:30 p.m. March 25.
