Tractor trailer crash spills debris on I-66, causes delays

By Katie Demeria

A tractor trailer crash late Monday left debris strewn across the eastbound lanes of Interstate 66 in Warren County, requiring several hours of cleanup.

Virginia State Police officials were called to the scene at mile marker 10 shortly after 11 p.m., according to Sgt. F.L. Tyler.

Warren County Fire and Rescue Services also assisted with traffic control and cleanup.

According to Chief Richard Mabie, the fire department arrived on scene to find the tractor trailer overturned.

"Initially the trailer was across both lanes," Mabie said. "It was destroyed, as well. It had collapsed into itself."

The vehicle was carrying recyclables, which Mabie described as old batteries and scrap pieces of metal.

Mabie said the driver had extricated himself by the time rescue crews arrived.

The driver had a laceration over his right eye and was treated by the rescue team, but refused transport to the hospital.

Traffic was stopped for 30 minutes, Mabie said, and eventually crews were able to veer one lane around the accident.

Fire and Rescue crews stayed on scene for several hours assisting with traffic control as a salvage company cleaned up the recyclables, he said. Workers said the operation could take up to 10 hours.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, the road was clear.

The incident was investigated by Trooper C.P. Maddox, Tyler said.

Neither the driver's name nor the cause of the wreck were released, but Tyler said the driver was charged in connection with the crash.
