Driver cited in I-81 crash

By Katie Demeria

A tractor trailer wreck on Interstate 81 closed the southbound lanes for over an hour on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at 12:15 p.m. at the 278.3 southbound mile marker, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. F.L. Tyler.

The tractor trailer's operator, Joseph Calhoun, 46, of Rockville Center, N.Y., was traveling in the left southbound lane when he ran off the left side of the roadway.

"He then came back across the roadway and struck a sign, and jack-knifed across all lanes," Tyler said.

The trooper investigating the crash, trooper T.E. Jefferson, issued Calhoun with a reckless driving summons.

Nobody was injured in the incident, Tyler said.

The Virginia Department of Transportation assisted with detouring traffic onto Route 11.

Edinburg Volunteer Fire and Rescue was called on scene to assist with cleanup.

Lt. Chris Tusing said that other than backing up traffic, the incident did not cause any injuries or imminent danger.
