Warren School Board asks for $1.9 million more

By Ryan Cornell

FRONT ROYAL -- The Warren County School Board has approved a proposed 2015 fiscal year budget that asks for $1.9 million more - or 9.3 percent -- from the county over the current budget.

The budget, which is $3 million higher than this year's budget, totals $53 million and projects $22.4 million in county appropriation.

Rob Ballentine, director of finance for the division, said the budget includes an additional math teacher at Warren County High School, two additional shuttle bus drivers, increased funding for Career Technical Education course materials and adult GED programs, increased Mountain Vista Governor's School tuition and increased special education contracted services.

The budget proposal approved Thursday night also includes a 2 percent raise for all full-time employees, which would cost $752,403.

"[W]e feel that to remain competitive or to, in some areas, become more competitive with recruiting and retaining employees, that this is the amount that represents the true needs of the school division for the coming year to be able to operate," Ballentine said.

The budget also accounts for a projected increase in utility costs from the Town of Front Royal.

Superintendent Pam McInnis said the proposed budget will be presented to county Administrator Douglas Stanley on Monday.

"They have many funding requests and may not be able to fund all requests," she said. "But again, we've built this relationship with the Board of Supervisors that I think they trust us to present what we need and, in turn, they trust us to understand they may not be able to fund everything."
