C.E. Thompson & Sons building up for auction
By Ryan Cornell
A building formerly housing Edinburg's iconic C.E. Thompson & Sons hardware and lumber store is set to be auctioned off on Wednesday.
The auction is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the shop part of the building.
Located at 201 Stoney Creek Blvd., the 24,000-square-foot building ncludes 10,000 square feet of basement storage and a loading dock.
The property is situated on two town lots totaling 2.13 acres.
C.E. Thompson & Sons began operating out of the building in 1974, though the company has served Edinburg since 1958.
The store closed in October 2012 due to a lack of sales volume and held two auctions that December to sell off its inventory and equipment. This is the first time the building has been auctioned off.
Mary Beth Foltz, daughter of owner Mary Lou Thompson, recalled growing up with the business. She was in second grade when the company first moved into the building.
"It was a good part of my life," she said. "It was income for our family and friends, and our lives depended on the business from it."
Foltz said a number of buyers have expressed interest in purchasing the property. She said it isn't an "absolute auction" and declined to share the starting price or minimum reserve price.
A bidder's deposit of $25,000 must be presented to bid on the property.
Foltz said the location's accessibility from Interstate 81 is a major selling point.
She said she felt like this was the right time to auction off the property, and added that she was grateful for the community's support over the years, even as the economy turned sour.
"We didn't have the contractors that we had," she said. "I think around 2007, 2008, a lot of them closed up."
Her husband, Joe Foltz, will serve as the auctioneer on Wednesday.
