Daily wins top prize for excellence in advertising, news

The Northern Virginia Daily took home the top prize in its circulation group for overall excellence in news and advertising at the annual Virginia Press Association awards ceremony held in Richmond on Saturday night.

Other daily newspaper grand prize sweepstakes awards were presented to The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk and The Free-Lance Star of Fredericksburg. There were eight publications competing in the Daily's circulation group of less than 20,000, six in the Virginian-Pilot's group of 70,000 or more, and six in the Free-Lance Star's group of 20,000-69,999, according to a news release issued following the ceremony.

Daily publisher Mike Gochenour praised the advertising and news staffs for a job well done in 2013.

"It's an honor to be chosen as the best daily newspaper in our group.  I'm very proud of everyone at the Daily," he said Saturday night. 

Other grand prize sweepstakes winners in the non-daily category were:
• The Prince William Today of Manassas -- non-daily group with a circulation of 10,000 or more
• The Breeze of James Madison University -- non-daily group with a circulation of 5,000-9,000
• The Tidewater News of Franklin -- non-daily group with a circulation of less than 5,000
• Richmond Magazine -- specialty publication

The Daily also won the sweepstakes award in its group for advertising, and best in show for an ad for C & S Carpet by Cheryl Dellinger and Carol Hough.

Other daily newspaper advertising sweepstakes winners were The Virginian-Pilot and The Free-Lance Star.

The Daily placed second in the news sweepstakes. First place winners were The Washington Post, the Free-Lance Star and The News Leader of Staunton.

This year's Virginia Press Association awards were presented for advertising design, news, feature and headline writing, photos, artwork and page design completed in 2013. Members of the Georgia Press Association judged the entries.
