Drug defendant sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison

By Joe Beck

FRONT ROYAL - A town resident was sentenced Tuesday in Warren County Circuit Court to 2 1/2 years in prison and at least two years probation following his conviction on seven offenses, most of them drug related.

Trent Allen Dodson pleaded no contest to charges of distributing heroin, methadone and hydromorphone, possessing oxycodone, two counts of distributing oxycodone, and grand larceny.

Judge Dennis L. Hupp imposed the sentence after accepting a plea agreement submitted by assistant commonwealth's attorney Michael Fleming and defense attorney Krystal Omps. Dodson was sentenced to a total of 32 years in prison but most of the sentence was suspended, leaving 2 1/2 years to serve behind bars.

Fleming recited a list of drug purchases involving confidential police informants and Dodson that spanned a period from August 2011 to February 2013.

Three charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

Omps told Hupp she had doubts that she could overcome the evidence against her client at a trial.

"It would have been a weak defense," Omps said in explaining her reasons for accepting the plea bargain.

Two of the cases involved crimes committed in Shenandoah County that were transferred to Warren County for Tuesday's hearing.

A co-defendant in the case, Samantha Marie Jenkins of Front Royal, was sentenced in July to 1 year and four months in jail on some of the same charges as Dodson.

"They were romantically involved," Fleming said in an interview after the hearing. "I guess you could say she was his girlfriend at the time."

Jenkins was also sentenced to three years supervised probation.
