Flames damage Strasburg storage unit business

Fire engulfed a building at Strasburg Self Storage Monday evening, and crews were still out fighting the flames at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The 20-by-120 building at 100 Quarry Lane was totally involved by the time firefighters arrived at around 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to Strasburg Fire Department Fire Chief Jeff Wharton.

Wharton said it took a good two hours to control the flames because they were within nine individual storage units.

“We had to cut into each unit, which took some time,” he said. “And then getting into them was difficult. Most were packed full of stuff. We had to pull things out of the way to get to the fire.”

Crews remained on scene throughout the night, still finding hot spots on Tuesday, Wharton said.

Wharton said most of the items within each unit were destroyed.

Nobody was at the business at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.

The Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue and the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

Middletown Volunteer Fire Department, Toms Brook Fire Department and Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue also responded to the incident.
