Free library event to shower first-time parents

By Josette Keelor

Tuesday the Shenandoah County Library plans to shower new and expectant first-time parents with love at its first Baby Love Baby Shower.

In the library at 514 Stoney Creek Blvd., Edinburg, first time parents will receive gifts and information from seven participating organizations and from a generous library patron, said Children's Librarian Diane Cary.

They'll have the opportunity to learn about birth, breastfeeding and community resources, as well as library programs for parents and young children.

She said she had the idea after attending a professional conference for librarians, "so I was trying to replicate it with a few tweaks."

"We want to be a resource to expectant and first-time parents," Cary said.

In addition to the library, participating organizations will be the Shenandoah Pregnancy Center, A Small Hand, Healthy Families Shenandoah County, Bright Beginnings Child Care, Infant and Toddler Connection of Shenandoah Valley, Library and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library -- an initiative in which children receive a free book once a month from birth to 5 years old, Cary said.

The free library party will have decorations and serve cake and punch -- what "you would have at a traditional baby shower," she said. Activities will include a bib parents can paint for their baby.

Cary said she also hopes to spotlight library programs like Books and Babies on Thursdays for parents with children younger than 2, and the Preschool Story Time on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for children 2 to 5. Both are year-round programs that meet at 10:30 a.m.

"It's a great time for sharing," she said. "We have wonderful families who come. Lots of different folks are caregivers for those who come to story time."

The Baby Love Baby Shower will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. For more information, call the library at 540-984-8200.
