Man involved in domestic brawl sentenced to two years prison

By Joe Beck

FRONT ROYAL -- A town resident was sentenced Tuesday to a total of two years in prison on charges stemming from what the prosecutor called a brawl with his ex-girlfriend and two of her family members.

Circuit Judge Dennis L. Hupp also sentenced Rickey Rae Minor, 52, formerly of 121 E. 14th St., to two years supervised probation to be followed by two years of unsupervised probation after completion of the prison sentence.

The fight left all three females -- Cicely Robinson, Helen King and Lauren Roberts -- with injuries described in court records and in testimony they gave at the sentencing hearing.

King, Robinson's mother, wept on the witness stand as she described the struggle that broke out when she entered a bedroom and saw Minor hitting and kicking her daughter in the early morning hours of July 28. Robinson was Minor's girlfriend up until that time and had told him earlier in the evening that she was breaking up with him.

Lauren Roberts, the teenage sister of Robinson, joined the fray, and sustained a wound to the back of her head when Minor threw her off of him, according to court records.

The criminal complaint states that Front Royal police officer Marc Ramey arrived at the scene and found Robinson with what he described as "a deformity" on her wrist as a result of the fight, although Robinson testified that the wrist was not broken.

King testified that the struggle left her with bruises on her face and arms.

Robinson had a lump on her forehead as a result of the assault.

Minor testified on his own behalf and admitted at one point grabbing Robinson by the wrist but not intending to hurt her. At that point, he said, King and Roberts entered the room and jumped on him.

"It wasn't my intention for her, her sister or anybody to be hurt," Minor said of Robinson. "I was simply trying to get them off of me."

In an interview after the hearing, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Anna Hammond rejected Minor's claims.

"What is there to say?" Hammond said. "He beat up three women and he had no remorse."
