WOODSTOCK - A Shenandoah County general district court judge set dates Monday for a bail hearing and a preliminary hearing in the voluntary manslaughter case of Daniel Scott Harvey.
W. Dale Houff scheduled the bail hearing for 11:15 a.m. Friday and the preliminary hearing for 2:45 p.m. June 27. Harvey appeared in the courtroom with his attorney, assistant public defender Simon Herr, and was later returned to jail where he is being held without bond.
"I don't expect it to take very long," Herr told Houff of his plans for the bail hearing.
Supporters of Harvey filled one bench in the center of the courtroom during the brief hearing.
Harvey, 33, of 600 Stephens Lane, Fort Valley, is accused of fatally shooting Harry Grant Nelson III, 36, of Winchester, on the evening of April 7 at Harvey's residence.
The Sheriff's Office says that Nelson died of a gunshot wound to the torso about an hour after the shooting. Authorities reported that Harvey was also injured in a scuffle after the shooting.
Sheriff Timothy C. Carter has said the shooting appeared to be linked to a previous relationship Harvey had with a member of a group that came to Harvey's house before the shooting. Carter has said the details of the dispute are unclear but evidence points to a "domestic boyfriend-girlfriend relationship."
Members of the Sheriff's Office recovered eight guns and ammunition in Harvey's residence, according to search warrant documents filed in Shenandoah County Circuit Court.
