Restaurant debuts unique dessert

WOODSTOCK -- With a name like The Other Place, the menu is bound to have some creative options.
Such is the case with the Gelato Burger, a scoop of gelato sandwiched between grilled brioche buns with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and a drizzle of chocolate syrup on top.
The result is a sweet and refreshing dessert similar to an ice cream crepe, where the buns are hot but the inside stays frozen.
Restaurant owner Coe Sherrard first learned of the treat in a food magazine last year. He was so enamored with the idea that he purchased a specialty gelato panini press.
Shaped like a waffle maker, but with a dip in the center, the gelato panini press hit the market nearly a year ago.
Because the equipment is so new, the Gelato Burger might be the only one of its kind in the area, and Sherrard is constantly looking out for ways to improve it. He said he hopes to use locally grown berries for the gelato, which is made in-house, and has been in talks with Strite's Donuts about using their dough.
But the Gelato Burger isn't the only quirk on the restaurant's menu. There's also the aptly named Meatless Cheeseburger grilled cheese sandwich, the French Family Fries -- a hat tip to a Shenandoah County family -- a veggie burger developed by the culinary students at Triplett Tech and the Adult Hoppy meal, which adds a side and a draft beer for $5.
The Other Place offers about 160 bottled beers and 11 draft beers, though Sherrard said he's "desperately trying not to be a bar."
"We want to be family oriented," he said. "We're not putting up big-screen TVs and we're not doing happy hours."
The restaurant, which opened April 17 next door to Sherrard's other business, the Woodstock Cafe & Shoppes, has enjoyed a healthy amount of success. Sherrard said they've served about 200 meals each of their first three days, and about 50 Gelato Burgers so far.
"The first time people try them, they'll cut them into halves or quarters and share them with their friends," he said. "People are coming back and they're not sharing them."
