Sephora to open in mall next month

WINCHESTER — The horizontal black and white stripes are unmistakable.

Peeking out from behind a tarp shielding the yet-to-be-unveiled space, they herald the future arrival of Sephora inside JCPenney.

The 2,200-square-foot beauty and cosmetics store, located at the center of the JCPenney in the Apple Blossom Mall, is set to open May 2.

Jenna Fox, beauty leader at JCPenney, said the store will sell color, fragrance and items for nail and skin care.

“I think everyone is so excited,” she said. “The very first question [from customers] is when are you opening? When can I get in there?”

She said Sephora will operate as an attraction inside the department store like Liz Claiborne and Levi’s.

“It makes JCPenney kind of a one-stop destination,” she said. “We have a hair salon here, we have a portrait studio, we have clothing and now we have makeup, fragrance and skin care.”

The two companies began partnering in 2006. There are more than 375 Sephora inside JCPenney locations in the U.S., according to its website, and the closest Sephora stores are in Sterling and Hagerstown, Md.

“It was about an hour drive for anyone who was looking for what we sell,” Fox said.

She said the consultants who will work at the store, Marcy Larrick and Emily Makosky, have been trained through educational programs focusing on skin care and general beauty.

Sephora inside JCPenney will host a grand opening May 2. The store will give out 750 gift bags with samples, and the first 100 people will receive sample bags with Sephora gift cards.

A release from the company states that the location will offer nearly 50 brands, including Marc Jacobs, Urban Decay, Make Up For Ever, NARS, Shiseido, Philosophy and Smashbox.
