Shentel goes digital

By Ryan Cornell

Shentel converted to an all-digital lineup for its cable customers in Shenandoah County this week.

The conversion from an analog to digital TV signal provides for a sharper picture, better sound quality and room for more channels, according to Edward McKay, vice president of wireline and engineering at Shentel.

Shentel cable customers in Shenandoah County without an existing cable box need to install a Digital Transport Adapter for each TV to get the full range in programming. Although the adapters are $2 each for every month, and the first two are free for the first year, McKay said there is no difference in the pricing of the cable plan.

Shentel started moving channels off its analog channels and onto its digital channels on Tuesday, he said, and if customers don't install the adapters, they will lose those channels.

He said the conversion has been implemented in four of its other cable markets and is now being implemented in Shenandoah County because of a need for additional capacity. He noted that one digital channel can fit in the same space as 10 to 12 analog channels.

"Up until this point, we still had space to add additional programming, but now we're full, we've reached the full capacity for the system," he said. "We wanted to wait as long as we could without impacting the customer."
