A 33-year-old Fort Valley man was charged with voluntary manslaughter after the shooting death of a Winchester man Monday night.
Sheriff Timothy C. Carter identified the defendant as Daniel Scott Harvey of 600 Stephens Lane, Fort Valley. Harvey is being held without bail in the Shenandoah County Jail.
Carter said Harvey is accused of shooting Harry Grant Nelson III, 36, during a confrontation at Harvey's home. Law enforcement officials have tentatively identified Nelson's address as 151 Wilkins Drive, Winchester.
Carter said deputies were called to the scene at about 7:18 p.m., where they found both men injured. Carter said "at least a couple of people" in a group with Nelson "were responsible for inflicting those injuries" on Harvey after the shooting.
Carter said he was not prepared to release details on what happened in the altercation after the shooting.
Harvey was airlifted by helicopter to Winchester Medical Center where he was treated, released and later taken into custody, Carter said.
"We do know that he suffered head trauma and trauma to the mid-section and torso," Carter said of Harvey.
Carter said a preliminary investigation has found the incident began when Nelson appeared at Harvey's house with "a few" other people.
"Through our preliminary investigation, it appears one of the people had a former relationship with (Harvey), and it's our understanding that this group came to the house, and an altercation erupted because of a dispute the assailant had with this person," Carter said.
Carter said investigators are still trying to determine details of the relationship that contributed to the fatal altercation.
Carter said Nelson was pronounced dead at 8:19 p.m. at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.
"The preliminary indication is that he died from a gunshot wound to the torso," Carter said, adding that an autopsy was being conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Manassas.
No information was available from the Sheriff's Office on the type of gun used in the shooting.
Carter said other public safety agencies that responded to the shooting included the Fort Valley Fire Department; Strasburg rescue squad; Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue; Woodstock Police Department; and the AirCare 4 medical evacuation helicopter from Front Royal-Warren County Airport.
Harvey is scheduled to appear at 9:30 a.m. April 11 in Shenandoah County General District Court.
The investigation is ongoing.
