Student to speak at Lord Fairfax commencement

By Ryan Cornell

Colt Scott, 20, of Strasburg, will speak at Lord Fairfax Community College's commencement ceremony on Saturday.

The college's 43rd annual commencement ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Skyline High School gymnasium in Front Royal.

Scott, who is graduating with an associate of arts and sciences degree in liberal arts, has enjoyed a successful year on the college forensics team.

Leslie Kelley, communications specialist at Lord Fairfax, said Scott was selected by a committee for his public speaking skills.

"It's basically about how he wants his fellow graduates to formulate a dream, set goals and make progress," she said about his address. "Another part of his speech is telling them not to listen to the voices of can't, won't and will not."

A total of 1,036 students at LFCC are graduating with an associate's degree or certification this year.

"That's not the biggest class ever, but it's not very far from it," Kelley said.

She said a new addition to the ceremony this year will honor the 50 veterans graduating from the college by having them wear red, white and blue cords along with their gowns.

College Board Medallion of Recognition Awards will be presented prior to the commencement to three "friends of Lord Fairfax" who have each contributed to foster the mission of the college. The three people who will be recognized are Garland Newell Snapp, who donated land for the college's student union; Margaret Barnett, who has served as budget and finance director since 2001; and John Graves, who funds annual scholarships at the college through Luray Caverns.

LFCC Event Coordinator Tammy Haire said the ceremony will also include the City of Winchester Pipes and Drums. She said the Shenandoah Valley Young Marines will serve as color guard and LFCC student Camille Gibson will perform the national anthem.

"It's just such an uplifting day," she said. "Every time I go, I'm always reminded how wonderful an opportunity it is, and to take part in it with the students is really fulfilling."
