Candidate seeks Front Royal council seat

The pool of candidates running for Front Royal Town Council continues to grow as the filing deadline approaches.

John P. Connolly, 28, of Duncan Avenue, announced on Thursday his intentions to run for a seat on council in the Nov. 4 general election. Connolly submitted his declaration of candidacy and the required signatures to the Warren County voter registration office this week.

"I want to give back to the community," Connolly said Friday. "I really do feel that the town is at an exciting time right now. The decisions that get made by the town in the next five, 10 years are going to impact us over the course of the rest of our lives.

"I've got young children and I want to make sure that we're leaving them a good town, a vibrant town, and a town where they want to stay and grow up in," Connolly added.

The Des Moines, Illinois-native grew up in central Wisconsin. Connolly moved to Front Royal to attend Christendom College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in English in 2008. Connolly lived for a short while in Philadelphia before moving back to Front Royal. As Connolly recalled, Philadelphia did not provide the environment in which he wanted to raise a family.

"Front Royal, as such a closely knit community, you can pretty much be assured that no matter where you live in the town, your neighbors are going to be there for you," Connolly said.

Connolly received a master's degree in library and information studies from the University of Alabama in 2012. He works as a librarian for the National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg. He and his wife, Sheila, have two children.

Connolly said he looks forward to expanding on his relationships within the town and the local government.

"What I want to bring to Town Council is a voice in favor of communication," Connolly said. "I can't run for council and say 'I'm going to do this' or 'I'm going to do that' because the council has to work together and the council itself needs to work together with the county, with the state, with the federal government."

Candidates have through June 10 to file the necessary papers to run for council in the town's first local election in November.
