Mayfest records banner turnout

Between 12,000 and 15,000 people attended the 32nd annual Strasburg Mayfest this weekend, according to Festival Chairman Rich Orndorff.

Orndorff, who has chaired the festival for the past five years, said it stands out in recent memory.

“This attendance was probably one of the best attended that we’ve had,” he said. “… and an overabundance of compliments from people that said it’s one of the best festivals that we’ve had for a while.

“The corner of King and Holliday [Streets], there were probably people 12 to 15 deep at the corner watching the parade and it continued like that just beyond Town Hall. The attendance was just tremendous.”

A new addition to the festival this year included a dining and dancing event on Friday night, a change from the usual street dance.

Orndorff added that exhibitors and vendors were impressed with the look of the completed sidewalks.

The parade was “just a little smaller” than last year after a couple of entries failed to show, but he said the new parade entries this year such as the Bolivian dance troupe were exciting.

One problem during the parade occurred when a band member from Strasburg High School experienced a medical emergency and ambulances had to cart him off “just as things were starting to step off,” but he said the student is doing well now.
