Pet of the Week: Calm kitty seeks loving home after heartbreak

WOODSTOCK -- An 8-year-old domestic long-hair cat is looking for a home.

The calm, fairly shy cat likes nothing more than to rub against the legs of his caretakers and purr until they pet him.

Renee Good, animal caretaker at the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter, said the cat has been at the shelter since his owners dropped him and Romeo, the cat he grew up with, off in late February. Though they had the cats all their lives, they could not keep them due to financial reasons.

"He was heartbroken when he first came in," Good said. "They do have feelings, and they do grieve -- we see it firsthand."

Eventually the cat went through more heartbreak, she added, when Romeo was adopted and left the shelter. The two were very close.

Good described the remaining cat as quiet and shy in new places, but when he becomes comfortable he wants nothing more than to curl up with his favorite human.

"He's an older kitty, so he's not as energetic," Good said. "He's just lovable and low maintenance."

With his long, dark silver coat, the cat enjoys sitting up and watching those around him, always purring contentedly.

"Oh, he's very handsome," Good said. "And he knows it."

Though a healthy cat, he does have some extra weight he could stand to lose. He is up to date on his vaccinations, but will soon need an updated rabies vaccine. He is neutered and, as a kitten, was declawed in his front paws.

When it comes to an ideal home, Good said he would probably do well anywhere, though he would have to be an indoor cat.

"He just wants someone who will pay attention to him," Good said as he rubbed against her leg, purring.

Good said one of the reasons it may take him a little longer to find a new home is due to his advanced age -- at 8 years old, he is considered a senior.

"He's just looking for someone to pet him and a nice cozy spot to sleep," Good said.

Shenandoah County Animal Shelter is located at 268 Landfill Road, Edinburg. For more information on this cat, call (540) 984-8955.
