Pet of the Week: Isabella waits for right home

By Josette Keelor

BERRYVILLE -- Isabella just became the longest active resident at the Clarke County Animal Shelter.

Surrendered to the shelter on March 20, 2013, the shorthaired calico nudged her way into the lead after the previous record holder found a family over the holiday weekend, said Brittany Fewell, kennel attendant. The calico arrived with another cat, who since has been adopted.

"Can't take care of them, too busy," Fewell read from Isabella's paperwork.

But in a room at the shelter with six other cats, 6-year-old Isabella has made herself at home.

"She is a rather plump kitty, but she's very laid back, very mellow, go with the flow, wants to be in your lap, wants to lay around all day," Fewell said. "So that's probably why she's plump."

Isabella is spayed and current on most vaccines but will need an updated rabies vaccine when adopted. She will be happy as an indoor cat, Fewell said, and she gets along with everyone. Males, females, cats, dogs and people of any age -- Isabella loves them all.

"She's incredibly sweet. She'll crawl up into your lap," Fewell said.

But finding her a family has been a challenge.

"It's kind of hard to place the adults," she said.

"It's personal preference. I would prefer to take an adult cat, but it's personal preference."

Across the hall, on a recent morning, a kitten climbed the cage bars for a better view of visitors while Morris, a recent arrival, loudly demanded his share of attention.

Isabella quietly waits her turn.
