Police seize $20,000 worth of marijuana in Strasburg bust

By Joe Beck

STRASBURG -- Law enforcement officials seized an estimated $20,000 worth of marijuana after arresting a local man Thursday at his apartment at 245 Brandy Court.

Joshua Paul Woodruff, 23, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and manufacture of marijuana. He was held without bail.

Deputy Chief Jerome Robinson of the Strasburg Police Department said members of his department assigned to the Northwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force arrested Woodruff after police received a tip of a strong smell of marijuana around the apartment complex.

Robinson said Investigator Chris Dodson narrowed down the source of the smell, and the Strasburg Police SWAT team executed a search warrant at the apartment.

Robinson said police seized $500 cash and eight marijuana plants, two growing and six hanging and drying, plus three pounds of dried marijuana. Robinson estimated the total value of the plants at around $14,000 and the three pounds of dried marijuana at $6,000.

Robinson described Woodruff's marijuana growing operation as unusually well equipped and designed to raise the plants in liquid instead of soil.

"This was a sophisticated hydroponic system where plants were supplied with proper air, water and nutrients," Robinson said, adding that the tip from Woodruff's neighbor in the apartment complex was crucial to building the case.

"Love those nosy neighbors," Robinson said.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with further information is asked to call Dodson at 465-5230.
