Prostitution defendants plead no contest

By Joe Beck

WOODSTOCK -- Two of seven defendants charged in a prostitution sting pleaded no contest Monday in Shenandoah County General District Court.

Daryl G. Mumaw, 34, of Edinburg and Gregory Forde, 56, of Mount Jackson received the same sentence: six months suspended jail term, one year unsupervised probation and a $500 fine. The two men also forfeited money they unwittingly gave to law enforcement officials as a result of the undercover investigation.

"They just wanted to get it over with," Bradley Pollack, the defendants' attorney, said in explaining their reason for pleading no contest.

Mount Jackson police, joined by the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office and police from Woodstock and New Market arrested the seven defendants on March 27 as a result of an undercover investigation.

Authorities say the investigation involved a confidential woman informant who advertised services on the Internet. The defendants then contacted the woman and scheduled a meeting at a hotel. Law enforcement officials made the arrests after the defendants arrived at the hotel, according to court documents.

A third defendant, James Deskins also appeared in court. Deskins, 59, the former director of the redevelopment authority in Winchester, told Tisinger has moved from Winchester to Harrisonburg since his arrest.

Commonwealth's Attorney Amanda Wiseley and defense attorney William Bassler told Tisinger that Bassler needed time to review a videotape of Deskins that was part of the evidence the prosecution has assembled.

"It sounds like for all intents and purposes this is a joint motion," Tisinger said before scheduling another hearing for 10:30 a.m. on June 9.
