Repeat child pornography offender gets four years in prison

By Joe Beck

FRONT ROYAL -- William Gavin Oden's second round of child pornography charges in about five years led to a four-year prison sentence Monday during a probation revocation hearing in Warren County Circuit Court.

Oden admitted his crime before Circuit Judge Dennis L. Hupp, who also sentenced him to five years supervised probation to be followed by 10 years unsupervised probation.

Oden disputed testimony from Lt. James Galbreath of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, who said Oden admitted during an interview that he looked at about 4,000 to 5,000 images of child pornography on the Internet after his release from prison for similar offenses.

Oden pleaded guilty in 2009 to 10 counts of possessing child pornography and was sentenced to three years in prison and 10 years probation, according to online court records.

Oden, who has been in jail 10 1/2 months since his most recent arrest, contended that Galbreath's statement that he admitted to viewing up to 5,000 images of child pornography was an exaggeration. But Oden did deny he had been violating the law and terms of his probation.

"I am truly sorry for what I have done," Oden told Hupp.

Hupp responded with scorn to Oden and defense attorney Jerry Talton, who contended that the 10 1/2 months in jail his client had already served was "substantial reinforcement that he never get back on the Internet again."

Hupp said he did not believe some mental evaluations of Oden that the evidence against the defendant fell short of what was needed to conclude he is a pedophile.

"I have no trouble believing Mr. Oden is a pedophile," Hupp said in his sentencing remarks, adding, "people like you support this industry that is out there exploiting children in this way."
