In addition to being bright students, members of the senior class at Riverfront Christian School are graduating as active volunteers.

According to school Director Cindy Martin, each of the seniors has about 105 hours of logged community service on projects such as helping to build an obstacle course and the Three Sisters garden at the 4-H Center, and working at an arboretum.

Four students are graduating at the school's commencement this Saturday: Emily Pusateri, Devin Lucie, Claudia Laing and Wade Bailey.

Emily plans to major in communications. Her goal is to write fashion and makeup reviews and work as a youth minister.

Devin, a member of the Interact Club, plans to attend Universal Technical Institute in Orlando, Florida.

Claudia, class salutatorian, has served as representative and vice president of the student council, secretary of the Interact Club and co-editor of the current yearbook. She also played on the school's volleyball and basketball teams. She plans to get an associate's degree at Lord Fairfax Community College and transfer to a four-year college to study law and possibly enter politics.

Wade, class valedictorian, seems to be following in the footsteps of his older brothers, Chad and Ryan.

Not only did Chad and Ryan Bailey both graduate from Riverfront as valedictorians, but also they chose to attend the school of pharmacy at Shenandoah University.

Unlike the path of his two older brothers, Wade has decided to pursue a master's degree in business and finance at Shenandoah University.

Wade, who had the highest grade point average in the class and served as student council vice president and Interact Club treasurer and vice president, will be giving a valedictory speech before the commencement address.

The address will be delivered by Katharine Fournier, who will be retiring after eight years of teaching high school classes at Riverfront. Martin said Fournier will probably stay connected to the school as a mentor.

"She developed our language arts program for the high school, worked on our science curriculum and she's been the science teacher for several years," Martin said.

Martin said Fournier is retiring because she wants to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Riverfront will present its awards for the class of 2014 at a senior banquet on Friday.

The commencement ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverfront Christian School at 55 E. Strasburg Road in Front Royal. This is the sixth annual graduation commencement at the school, which is 18 years old.
