WINCHESTER -- Scarlett saw all six of her kittens adopted from the Frederick County Esther L. Boyd Animal Shelter, but she is still searching for a home of her own.

A diluted calico cat, Scarlett was dropped off at the shelter in November 2013, pregnant and having likely been a stray before, according to animal caretaker Kamryn Dixon.

She said Scarlett was a good mom, but she still seemed relieved to allow her kittens to go to new homes.

"It was like she could finally have a vacation," Dixon said. "Sometimes we would come in and she'd be sitting on the top shelf so they couldn't reach her. That was when they were bigger and just about to be weaned."

Though she was an experienced mother, the 1-year-old Scarlett is not far out of the kitten stage herself.

She has a classic cat personality, Dixon pointed out. Scarlett is quick to rub against the legs of new people she meets, and will push her face against their hands, but she also likes to explore on her own.

"She'll let you know when she wants some attention," Dixon said.

Scarlett is a flexible cat and would likely be happy in any home that pays attention to her, but also lets her go after her own pursuits at other times. She enjoys playing both on her own and with the people around her.

She would likely have no problem with kids, according to Dixon, and already gets along with cats. Scarlett's relationships with dogs would depend on the temperament of the dog in the home, Dixon added.

Because Scarlett is not yet spayed, her adoption fee is $80.

"She would just be happy with someone who has time to play with her," Dixon said.
